Living as Foreigners

“Dear friends,” Peter writes, “I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world…”Perhaps no phrase offers a better description of our current predicament. It is certainly how the world looks at us sometimes, as if to say, “What planet are you from?” In our current culture, our lives, our language, and our faith practices are foreign. We are considered quaint, intolerant, or just downright bizzare. Christians, it seems, are always fair game for ridicule or scorn.

The apostle Peter wrote this letter to Christians living in Roman provinces. No longer was the Christian community living all together in a quiet enclave of Jerusalem but the good news of Jesus life, death and resurrection was spreading fast to other parts of the world. Nero, Emperor of Rome, was hostile toward Christians. They lived under the constant threat of persecution. In response to the rising tension, Peter wrote this letter to encourage Christians to continuing living as foreigners – people who live here but who aren’t from here.

What does it mean to live faithfully as Christ followers in a culture in which we are considered irrelevant, misunderstood, or are out and out rejected?

Join us for the next 8 weeks as together we consider living as foreigners.
