City on a Hill
.”..You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors
in the world. God is not a secret to be kept.
We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.”
Matthew 5:14 MSG
Someone once said to Hannah Whitall Smith, author of The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life, “You Christians seem to have a religion that makes you miserable. You are like a man with a headache. He does not want to get rid of his head, but it hurts him to keep it!.”
What?! What a sad and stinging portrait of those who claim to live in the JOY of the Lord! Of course, all of us, Christians included, experience challenges, pain, frustration, uncertainty, and sorrow.
But how do we live through these with and still experience and radiate the goodness of God in our lives? Not in an artificial or plastic kind of way, but authentically giving thanks to God for His blessing in the face of reality and shining His light through the darkness.
